Part of a series of factsheets and practical guides for conducting participatory variety evaluation with farmers. The series is focused on evaluating sorghum and pearl millet varieties but contains advice that would be helpful for a range of participatory research projects. It includes methods for identifying priority evaluation criteria with farmers, as well as different options for documenting farmers choices and evaluations.

This guide explains how  classifying and scoring are useful tools for distinguishing differences between varieties or new farming methods being tested, and gives steps for undertaking the process. It compares the advantages and disadvantages of ranking and scoring.
